Although Maria's illness has been controlled to the point where she can continue her life on Earth for a while, that doesn't mean she's cured. In the canon of this AU's story, Shadow sacrificed himself for her and her grandfather to reach Earth, using all his Chaos Power in the process. This entailed two things: Maria and Gerald traveled through a space-time vortex of 50 years on Earth, but for them, only 6 years passed in the blink of an eye. Physically and mentally, they advanced that time, and her body was nourished with controlled Chaos energy. Thanks to this, Gerald Robotnik created a "medicine" to keep her health stable, but that solution has been losing its effectiveness. Maria and Matt now suffer relapses while they search for a definitive cure for her.
