2 February 1217 – Battle of Otepää “Fools! Absolute fools!” Dark Paladin snarled. It seems Rurik I’s legacy may be erased soon, as the Kievan Rus is on the cusp of being destroyed. German knights were ruthlessly cut down by her precision strikes through their visors, and the occasional Teutonic knight, slipping on the ice, rendered himself defenseless against even the Rus peasants, for the Teutons were unaccustomed to such harsh cold. One of her comrades called, “Whom are you calling a fool?” “Everybody,” she snarled back, taking the life of another German knight. Who did she mean by “fools”? It could be the Polish who invited the Teutonic Knights into the Baltics; the various Baltic tribes inhabiting the region had killed many Poles, and an alliance with the Crusaders seemed logical, but this was very much a Faustian bargain. Had they not witnessed the slaughter of the First and Second Crusades, where not even Christians were spared? Even now, countless innocent Balts are put to the sword. How can the Poles trust the Latins not to turn their swords against them one day? Maybe she meant the various princes of the Kievan Rus: even with the threat in the West and the Mongols inflicting a devastating defeat at the Kalka River, where many princes were killed in the east, they could not unite to face the existential danger. As for the fool Igor Svyatoslavich, he was a fool for trying to fight alone, but at least he fought enemies rather than bickering with other Rus principalities. Unlike the Polovtsians he fought, though, the Mongols knew siege warfare and systematically razed cities to the ground. But most likely, she meant the Christians who fought alongside them. Didn’t the Bible warn of the devil who would trick mortals away from God’s path? Never in the Fallen Paladin’s dreams, however, could she imagine how open the devil was. The massacres of innocents in God’s name, the defilers of holy places—they wore horned helmets as if they proudly showed their devotion to the devil. And yet these knights called themselves Christians, and many followed. Dark Paladin would know, though. She once called them brethren herself, fought alongside the Crusaders in the Middle East as a holy warrior, and witnessed many atrocities firsthand by the Crusaders. Now she is at the receiving end of this misguided zeal, as Pope Celestine III declared war against the ‘schismatic’ Rus, proclaiming that cleansing them was a holy duty and peace with them was forbidden. Dark Paladin fell for these lies once before. But of course, she is known as the “Fallen Paladin” for a reason: disgraced in the eyes of the false pope, she now fights for her own existence, a holy warrior now deemed a beast. She embraced it though, traded in her golden gleaming armor for the blackest there is.
