Curiosity pulled half the village to the forge that evening. Lyra came too. Sophie gawked at the knight the way children look at stories made flesh. Lyra only watched him work out his business with Garren — an ordinary stranger, nothing more. But he had looked at her a moment too long. Not the way men look at women. The way a man looks at something that doesn't fit. He had seen a great deal of the world, and she did not belong to this part of it.
