Ancient Chinese ancestral hall (祠堂) transformed into an abandoned shadow puppetry theater (皮影戏), night. A large translucent white projection screen stands at the center, softly illuminated from behind by a single warm oil lantern. Behind the screen, delicate Chinese shadow puppets silently perform by themselves, despite the complete absence of any puppeteer.
In front of the stage, dozens of traditional Chinese paper effigies (纸人) sit motionless like an audience. Their pale white faces have crimson painted cheeks and lips, all wearing faded Qing dynasty ceremonial clothing. Every paper doll faces the stage except for one, which quietly turns its face toward the viewer.(See Image 1),
The shadow puppets are crafted from translucent donkey-hide leather with intricate floral cutwork and visible bamboo framework. Rich ornamental carvings depict dragons, phoenixes, peonies, and swirling cloud motifs.
Thin streams of incense smoke drift through the hall, intertwining with warm lantern light. Rows of ancestral tablets, bronze incense burners, hanging calligraphy scrolls, carved wooden pillars, dark roof beams, lattice windows, red silk tassels, and weathered wooden floorboards fill the background.
The atmosphere is eerily silent, solemn, mysterious, and dreamlike. No violence, no blood, no grotesque imagery. Psychological horror created through stillness, empty space, unnatural silence, subtle unease, and the uncanny contrast between light and shadow.
The shadow on the screen subtly differs from the actual puppet positions, suggesting impossible movement. The audience cannot tell whether the puppets are casting the shadows, or the shadows are controlling the puppets.
