1977年（昭和52年）、美容家で学校法人・山野学苑の創設者でもある山野愛子（やまの あいこ、1909～1995年）が、「針供養」に倣って「ハサミ供養」を提唱。 日付は「ハ（8）サ（3）ミ」（鋏）と読む語呂合わせから。翌1978年（昭和53年）、東京・芝の増上寺の境内に「ハサミ観音」（聖鋏観音）が建立され、この日に美容・理容・洋裁などの関係者が集まって「ハサミ供養」が行われる。仕事で最も大切な道具であるハサミに感謝を表し、技術の一層の向上を祈念することが目的。
