The SKS ( Self-loading Carbine of Simonov system) is a semi-automatic (only) rifle firing the intermediate 7.62x39 cartridge (the same one used by the more famous AK) adopted by the Soviet army immediately after World War II. While replaced relatively quick in Soviet use due to the discovery that the AK did pretty much everything the SKS did at least as well and there was no need for both, the (high command of the) Maoist Chinese would become incredibly fond of their version of it, the Type 56 Semi-Automatic Rifle (sometimes known in western circles as the Type 56 Carbine to distinguish it from semi-automatic only versions of the other, AK based, Type 56) and it would become a icon of PLA propaganda.
