※Major spoilers for the late game and post-game content of BAR Stella Abyss follow.
■ Character Introduction
Tipsy is a mysterious being from Nippon Ichi Software’s simulation RPG BAR Stella Abyss, officially described as a servant of the god of the Drunken World. The character is voiced in Japanese by Michiyo Murase.
When the protagonist becomes trapped in the dreamlike Drunken World after drinking, Tipsy is the one who helps them and gives them the name “Samayoi.” From the early stages of the story onward, Tipsy acts as a guide while helping the protagonist pursue the culprit who stole their face and arm.
Tipsy is a small white fantasy creature with a highly distinctive design. Their most recognizable features include huge white eyes with tiny black pupils, several long head appendages shaded in blue and violet, a leafy green vine crown, short arms, fin-like structures along the body, and a long aquatic tail ending in a split tail fin. No clear biological species or gender is explicitly established in official profile material, and Tipsy is best understood as a unique fantasy creature rather than a conventional animal-based character.
Despite the cute appearance, Tipsy is sarcastic, blunt, and often openly exasperated by human weakness, especially the way people drink far beyond their limits. However, after spending more time with Samayoi, Tipsy gradually develops a much deeper attachment and affection toward them.
■ Role in the Story
At the beginning of the game, the protagonist drinks at the bar Stella Abyss and later awakens in the Drunken World with their face and arm missing. Tipsy is the first being they meet there, gives them the name Samayoi, and becomes their guide through exploration and combat.
Tipsy tells Samayoi that the dangerous entity known as Dead Shaker is responsible for stealing their body parts and leads them toward uncovering the truth. As the story progresses, however, more and more questions begin to surround Tipsy’s true motives and behavior.
During the late-game Sanctuary section, Tipsy eventually becomes openly hostile. Their intense desire to escape into the real world and obtain a human body is revealed, leading to a direct confrontation with Samayoi and the others.
The final boss sequence begins with a battle against Tipsy in their familiar form. After being defeated, Tipsy transforms into the second form known as Yoi-Gami. Yoi-Gami then divides into multiple bodies with changing elemental properties and attack patterns, turning the encounter into a multi-phase battle involving powerful techniques such as “Divine Punishment” and “God’s Curse.”
Through this confrontation, it becomes clear that Tipsy has carried a deep sense of loneliness for a very long time and has come to desperately desire escape from the Drunken World and entry into the real world.
■ Final Fate and Later Events
Tipsy and Yoi-Gami are defeated in the final battle, but Tipsy is not killed or permanently erased.
Rather than dismissing Tipsy as nothing more than an enemy, Samayoi chooses to save them as an important friend. As a result, their relationship changes from guide and traveler into something much closer to trusted partners.
Tipsy continues to appear in the post-game New Awakening World content and openly shows that they now trust Samayoi as a partner. The post-game story also explores Tipsy’s former partner, Buzy, whose past helps explain Tipsy’s loneliness and obsession with the human world.
■ Official Setting and Design
Tipsy’s official role is that of “a servant of the god of the Drunken World.” As the being who guides humans trapped in that realm and even gives Samayoi their name, Tipsy occupies an important position between the human world and the Drunken World.
Their visual design centers on a pure white body, several long head appendages with blue-violet gradients, a green vine crown, huge white eyes, tiny black pupils, short arms, aquatic fins, a long tail, and a large split tail fin. The silhouette is deliberately unlike that of the human cast, giving Tipsy a distinctly supernatural and mascot-like presence.
The name “Tipsy” means slightly drunk or mildly intoxicated in English, making it a very direct reference to the game’s central themes of alcohol and intoxication.
BAR Stella Abyss was developed with Yu Mizokami credited for original planning and art direction, while Mio Katsumata handled character design. The Japanese limited edition also included a 44-page visual art book featuring illustrations from the game.
■ Trivia and Obscure Details
Tipsy is an unusual character because they begin as a mascot-like guide but eventually become an actual boss unit near the end of the game.
The boss version of Tipsy has MOV 4, is weak to Earth, and resists Fire and Water. The Yoi-Gami form has MOV 5, and its elemental strengths and weaknesses change as the battle progresses and the boss splits into multiple forms.
Although the name “Tipsy” has a lighthearted meaning, the character’s later story deals with much heavier themes such as loneliness, dependency, and escapism. That contrast between a playful name and a tragic motivation is one of the character’s most memorable traits.
Official merchandise has also featured several newly drawn Tipsy illustrations, including alcohol-themed designs such as “Cheers Tipsy,” “Hangover Tipsy,” and “Tipsy Abstaining from Alcohol.”
