26 August 1507 - Cannanore, India The stillness of the sea is a vast paradox to the movement on land: ten thousand troops consisting of spears, swords, bows, guns, cannons, and elephants are besieging a fortress on the island of Cannanore. The Portuguese defenders are holed up like cornered dogs in a single fortress known as St. Angelo Fort. Suriyaki, behind the ramparts, fired her espingardas arcabuz yet again in a disciplined volley; the gates are down, most men are wounded. The monsoon of the Indian subcontinent made the fight for life worse. Almost half the people were dedicated just to keeping blackpowder dry, with the same rain penetrating the roofs in their sleep. The Almeida company, which Suriyaki is part of, is reduced to eating rats and lizards. Loyalties were uncertain; years prior, some scumbag Milanese defected to the Indian Rajas, and now even their Hindu allies, the Kolathiri Raj, betrayed the company for Zamorin’s gold, resulting in Suriyaki and Almeida’s company being stuck here in this dire siege to begin with. This is what it looks like to fight the world. They’re all here to thwart the ambitions of the Portuguese: Venetians, Dutch, French, Milanese, Zamorins, Ottomans, Arabians.
