Mechasaurus Zai — Getter Robo

Mechasaurus Zai — Getter Robo

Mechasaurus Zai is a ground-combat Mechasaurus deployed by the Dinosaur Empire in the 1974 TV anime Getter Robo. Appearing in the first two episodes, it is one of the “Three Great Mechasauruses,” alongside the aerial combat specialist Bado and the aquatic combat specialist Zuu.

Its most distinctive features are a large, ceratopsian-like frill and two horns arranged one behind the other along its snout. Four thick legs support its stocky, red-to-pink body, while riveted reddish-brown armor covers its back and sides. Its yellow-green underbelly and matching frill trim provide a striking contrast.

Dark, round studs form a vertical row down the center of its pink forehead plate. Its pink-to-red eyes have black pupils and small white highlights, with no white sclera or separately colored irises. The short, pointed, reddish-brown projection at its rear is its tail; it has no long tail.

In battle, Zai specializes in horn-first charges. During its first deployment, it destroys a hydroelectric dam with a single strike of its horns. Working together with Bado and Zuu, it pushes Getter Robo into a desperate situation. In Episode 2, however, it faces Getter-2, a form suited to fighting both on land and underground. Zai retreats beneath the ground, only to be pursued and destroyed by the Getter Drill.

Its appeal lies in the combination of a heavy, four-legged beast silhouette, an expressive, organic-looking face, and riveted armor. As one of the series’ notable early enemy machines, Zai embodies the distinctive living-weapon aesthetic of the Dinosaur Empire.
