Great library of Pergamon
Created by the ancient Greek city state of Pergamon, the modesty in outside appearance is made up for in the practical consideration like leaving open gaps on the outer walls as a form temperature control (since it was located on Anatolia). The Ptolemaic empire seeing unwanted competition to its Great library of Alexandria issued an embargo of papyrus onto Pergamon. Pergamon adapted and start using parchment instead, to the point it became the leading supplier of it to the Romans laters and as a result the word parchment as we know it derives from the Roman "pergamenum" referencing Pergamon. https://www.worldhistory.org/Library_of_Pergamon/
