As for Nyaoko's cat ears and tail? Records of the Battle of Telamon noted naked barbarians charging into battle, so the Romans weren't particularly surprised by 'cat decorations'. Pliny the Elder figured, though, that Nyaoko was smart enough to do her own research. Sending children as field researchers, what a novel practice! Or perhaps it was because Pliny the Elder simply saw a name on the ledger without realizing Nyaoko's age, and figured it was 'good enough'. Nyaoko was given the mandate to interview people throughout the Roman Empire, praise the deeds of Emperor Vespasian, and, as Pliny instructively exalted, to do the deeds yourself instead of relying on a god or the words of the temple. Despite the Pax Romana where peace theoretically reigned, banditry remained a constant. Due to institutionalized slavery, there were many opportunistic slave catchers roaming around, along with other perils of traveling alone, so she was accompanied by a guardian legionnaire who had nothing better to do. They would, in turn, wait at the gates until a large enough company assembled to go outside and travel with strength of numbers. Some observations were easy to validate and logically synthesize, like the stars not influencing human behavior and the Earth being round. A full spin of the cosmic body took three hundred sixty degrees, changing one degree per day, except that five point five days had to be added, as observed when sundials became desynchronized. Pliny further alleged that Endymion was right about the orbit of the moon, though the mob ridiculed him for it. If only they lived in more enlightened times! Nyaoko's field research, as such, was mostly relegated to speaking to people on estates, since she was a child and safety was an issue, along with her actual capacity to perform conducive research. Still, standards for acceptance were subpar, leaving one to wonder about the people who 'spoke the truth'. So it was recorded that: Among other things, a centurion alleged that one day his olive garden switched to the other side of the public highway. An astronomer claimed that multiple suns had been observed, though no more than three, because three is naturally the limit. A merchant from the province of Egypt told her that the oryx would look upon the Dog Star and sneeze in worship. A Greek philosopher told her that the river Melas would turn a sheep's wool black if they drank from it. Naturally, adults are always correct, so Nyaoko diligently wrote it all down. She presented the information about the people she spoke to, although instead of names, she used vague descriptions like 'a person from Greece' or 'that guy from Egypt'. Despite Aristotle having divided natural philosophy somewhere in the fourth century BC, rigor was not yet highly refined. Some voices alleged there was more to the world than physics, math, and theology alone, but since they did not speak Greek, they were dismissed as barbarians at the time. So it was that when Pliny compiled his series on the research of natural history, all of Nyaoko's work was integrated with the rest because few knew any better at the time.
