The Legend of Nawoj and Jowa

A local legend, dating up to XIIIth century, about how the village where I live was estabilished, tells a story about Nawoj, a knight, who fell in love with a beautiful peasant girl named Jowa. As their social status was vastly different, they were hiding their feelings from the outside world for a long time until Nawoj gathered enough money to estabilish a village where he himself would be a lord - and so could to marry Jowa without anyone to stop him. When Nawoj returned to Jowa's village with an engagement ring, though, he didn't find his sweetheart. He searched for her in the nearby forests just to find her dead by the hands of local brigands. Struck by grief, he buried her and estabilished a village in her place of final rest, calling it Nawojowa. There is more than one version of the legend. In another, Nawoj was a destitute knight and Jowa was a rich merchant's daughter. Her father forced her to marry a wealthy suitor rather than the poor knight, who nonetheless never forgot his love. In yet another, Nawoj never met Jowa alive, but rather found her lifeless body after a brigsnds' attack, yet was still charmed by her beauty to the point of remembering her forever. No matter the version, the village was named Nawojowa and bears this name ever since.
