Spirit is a golden-coated (specifically, isabella) mustang horse of incredible charm, indomitable, rebellious, wild and courageous. He is the leader of the Cimarron herd, a role in which he succeeded his father. He has never known humans, and the first time he tries to approach them, he is captured by soldiers who forcibly separate him from his family and his land. Traumatised by this unpleasant experience, he tries to have nothing more to do with them until he meets Little River, with whom he befriends and thanks to whom he learns that not all humans are cruel. Spirit willingly allows Little River to ride him only at the end of the film.
