Elena Alexandria (simply called Alex by her friends) was the last leader of the rebel faction of the Eirian Civil War. The warlock Mantus Omar wanted to create a warrior race who could Endure, Immediately mature, and Repoduce rapidly (EIR-ian). He intended to create a utopian nation, but instead, the nation of Eiri devolved into a military dictatorship. Alex was conscripted to crack down against the growing rebel movement. Alex was invited to join a secret training program known as the Shirudo Project, but she instead used her new training skills to escape her barracks and defect to the rebels. The horrors of war didn't stop Alex from quickly rising through the ranks and eventually got her elected as the new leader of the revolution. Omar did not know much about Alex initially, but her ascension became inspiring enough to warrant desperate measures. Omar had to swiftly crack down against this new wave of revolution by sending his new deadly special forces: the Shirudos.
Alex, as a rebel fighter, relies on tactics and her skill with her naginata to defeat the better-equipped soldiers of Omar. While her physique compared to a human woman is merely above average, her determination and commitment to both justice and liberty made her a popular leader during her prime (even though she has stage fright). Alex wanted to live the life of a normal (maybe slightly tomboyish) lady and to pursue a career in cooking so that she can feed her starving nation, but the war (and hatred of Omar) has made her reasonably stressed out. She's not always serious and she can be very friendly; but she wears the longcoat of her deceased boyfriend, Gerald, as a reminder of the horrors of war.
