Jurassic period

The Jurassic period was a major geological time period that lasted from approximately 201 to 145 million years ago. It is famously known as the "Golden Age of Dinosaurs." Here are the key characteristics of this fascinating era: Geography and Climate The supercontinent Pangaea began to break apart during this time, splitting into Laurasia (which would become North America and Eurasia) and Gondwana (which would become Africa, South America, Antarctica, and Australia). This continental drift created new coastlines and shallow seas. The global climate was generally warm and humid, with no polar ice caps, which allowed for lush plant growth across much of the planet. Plants and Animals The Jurassic period's warm and moist environment supported vast, dense forests. The dominant plant life included conifers, such as towering redwood relatives, as well as cycads and ferns. Flowering plants had not yet evolved. This period is best known for its incredible diversity of animal life, particularly dinosaurs:

• Herbivorous Dinosaurs: Massive, long-necked sauropods like Brachiosaurus and Diplodocus roamed the land, feeding on high foliage. Armored dinosaurs such as Stegosaurus, with its iconic plates and spiked tail, were also common.
• Carnivorous Dinosaurs: The jungles were home to fierce predators like Allosaurus, a large, powerful hunter.
• Marine Life: The oceans were filled with a variety of life, including marine reptiles such as ichthyosaurs (dolphin-like predators) and plesiosaurs (long-necked hunters).
• Flying Creatures: The skies were ruled by pterosaurs, a group of flying reptiles. The first-known bird, Archaeopteryx, also appeared during the late Jurassic, showing a mix of dinosaur and bird features.
• Early Mammals: Though small and mostly nocturnal, early mammals were present and lived in the shadows of the dinosaurs.
