In many creative communities, there exists the concept of an "OC" (Original Character). Creators often describe their relationship with their characters using familial metaphors, referring to themselves as the character's "parent" and the character as "their child."
However, the legal foundations underlying creative works differ from country to country. Copyright law does not define originality, authorship, or protectable expression in exactly the same way across all jurisdictions. As a result, the very concept of an OC may acquire different meanings depending on the cultural and legal environment in which it is created.
In my country, for example, a prompt that merely specifies a character's traits is generally not considered copyrightable expression. A list of attributes describing a character's appearance may be regarded as an idea, instruction, or specification rather than a creative work protected by copyright.
This creates an interesting tension. Within OC culture, creators may still regard such a character as "their child," yet the legal system may not recognize exclusive rights over the prompt that defines the character. Consequently, the notion of an OC is not solely a legal category nor solely a cultural one; it emerges from the interaction between copyright law, creative practices, and community norms.
Therefore, the idea of an OC should not necessarily be understood as a universal concept. Different creative cultures may attribute different meanings to authorship, ownership, and creative parenthood. What one community regards as a creator's unique child may be viewed elsewhere as a collection of shared character traits, a design concept, or merely a prompt specification./多くの創作コミュニティには、「OC(オリジナルキャラクター)」という概念が存在する。
