HISTORY Dragon Quest Builders 2 is a sandbox action role-playing game developed by Square Enix and Omega Force, and published by Square Enix. It serves as a sequel to the 2016 game Dragon Quest Builders and is set in an alternate reality based on Dragon Quest II. The game was first released in Japan on December 20, 2018, for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, and globally on July 12, 2019. The Windows version launched on December 10, 2019, via Steam, followed by the Xbox One release on May 4, 2021.
The story takes place after the defeat of Hargon and the Lord of Destruction, Malroth, by the Scions of Erdrick. Hargon, in his final act, created an artificial reality to trap Malroth’s soul and reawaken him with full power. The player assumes the role of a young Builder, captured by the Children of Hargon, a cult determined to eradicate creation and destroy all builders. After escaping a sinking ship, the Builder washes ashore on the Isle of Awakening, where they meet Malroth, a mysterious boy with no memory of his past. Together, they journey across islands to rebuild towns, uncover the truth behind the illusionary world, and confront the corrupted Malroth.
The game features several gameplay enhancements over its predecessor, including four-player multiplayer, gliding, underwater exploration, increased building height (up to 999 blocks), fast travel, and a first-person perspective. It received generally favorable reviews, with a Metacritic score of 85–86 across platforms, and shipped over 1.1 million copies worldwide by August 2019. The game also won the Japan Game Awards 2019 Award for Excellence.
A post-credits scene hints at a deeper mystery: Malroth discovers sketches in the Builder’s book—images of a giant tree, an insect-like vehicle, and other artifacts—suggesting the dream world may have been the Builder’s own creation all along.
Personality In the vast majority of his appearances, Malroth has little discernible personality outside of his desire for destruction. The major exception to this is his amnesiac humanoid appearance in Dragon Quest Builders 2, where he is one of the game's main characters.
In his human state, he has no inkling of his true nature as the Master of Destruction. He has a somewhat violent disposition, which escalates as the Builder's adventure progresses, causing others to fear him. He also has a somewhat morbid personality, which is evident even upon his first meeting with the Builder, where he is excited to get a closer look at the dead bodies littering the beach. He tends to feel at home in dark subterranean places and shrines dedicated to Hargon and the Master of Destruction, though he is unable to place why he feels so.
Malroth demonstrates a lack of knowledge on many basic concepts, such as "love" and "parties", being confused by Babs’ many admirers at Khrumbul-Dun, and the small party Lulu arranges for him and the Builder on the Isle of Awakening. Malroth also is lacking in understanding of typical social graces and is often prone to outbursts and bluntness, leading to some humorous exchanges and later arguments. This ignorance of social customs is occasionally brought up by other characters who mention him doing things such as skinnydipping without understanding why he's not supposed to. He develops a habit of using a high-five with the Builder as a celebratory gesture, but he is unsure of what inspired him to start doing so. He develops a friendship with the Builder over the course of their adventure.
Throughout the game, he appears to have a tendency to not think too much on questions about his odd appearance, the voice in his head, or the odd nature of the world around him. He often quickly moves on to the next subject at hand or deems it unimportant, even if the question is substantial. Though, he increasingly becomes more aware of how different he is compared to the Builder, resulting in him feeling as though he must assert his usefulness to the Builder after they learn how to make traps in Moonbrooke. This often manifests as him bluntly asserting that he can do what traps cannot multiple times, only for him to later tell the Builder that they don't need each other's company after he is imprisoned in Moonbrooke's dungeon.
Despite his words in Moonbrooke, his attachment to the Builder lasts even after Hargon forces him to attain his true form, though the great dissonance between his sentimentality and desire for destruction causes him to split into two entities, his human avatar, which retains these traits, and his unrestrained true form, which retains its single-minded directive for destruction (Which also retains its talking.). The Demon Lord himself even despises his human self, calling him weak. Meanwhile, his human self appears to dissociate himself from the Demon Lord to a degree, referring to him as "Lizard Features" and his "alter ego".
In postgame interactions with different characters in Dragon Quest Builders 2, Gillian mentions that he tends to become quite grumpy when the Builder goes elsewhere without him. In addition, Babs mentions that when the Builder is knocked out, he is the one responsible for carrying the Builder back to base to heal, though she mentions he's typically in a panicked state when this occurs.
