Her soft eyes look straight out of the frame at the viewer, lids heavy, mouth set in a gentle, almost apologetic line, and the calm of that expression is what makes the picture unnerving.
The whole surface is a surreal dark painterly illustration, its forms modelled with soft painterly shading and rough, expressive brushstrokes, the shadows grainy with gritty texture rather than smooth gradient. Intricate detail crowds the lace, the ribbon folds and the embroidery, all of it collapsing into darkness at the frame's edge.
