【基本設定と役割】
種族: 主に「魔獣（Beast）」または「妖獣（Wilder）」として分類されます。
神話の原典: ギリシャ神話に登場する双頭の犬です。怪物テュポーンとエキドナの間に生まれ、冥界の番犬ケルベロスの兄にあたります（神話によっては弟ともされます）。ゲーリュオーンの牛の群れを守る優秀な番犬でしたが、ヘラクレスの「12の功業」の際に討伐されてしまいました。
メガテンでの性能: 序盤から中盤にかけてパーティーを支える中堅悪魔としてお馴染みです。主に「火炎（アギ系）」の魔法と、獣ならではの強力な物理攻撃を得意とし、火炎属性を無効化・吸収する耐性を持つことが多いのが特徴です。
【裏話・マニアックなトリビア】
「ケルベロス」とのデザインの対比: シリーズの看板悪魔であるケルベロス（パスカル）が「一つ頭の白い獅子犬」というメガテン独自のスタイリッシュなデザインを与えられているのに対し、オルトロスは「双頭」という神話の伝承に忠実なシルエットを保っています。しかし、黄色い体表に深緑の鬣、節のある紫の尻尾という「悪魔絵師」金子一馬氏らしい前衛的な色彩設計により、一度見たら忘れられない強烈な個性を放っています。
『女神転生II』での数奇な運命: ファミコン版『デジタル・デビル物語 女神転生II』において、オルトロスは魔王パズスの配下として登場し、序盤で一時的に頼もしい仲魔（パーティーメンバー）になってくれます。しかし、親友が離反する際、なんとマッカ（お金）の半分や重要アイテムと共にオルトロスを引き連れていってしまうという、プレイヤーにとって非常に痛手となるトラウマイベントが存在します。
ケルベロスの影に隠れがちな「兄」: メガテンにおいてケルベロスが「主人公の絶対的な相棒」として破格の扱いを受けているため、オルトロスはやや影が薄く、敵対する野良悪魔としての登場が多めです。しかし、決して弱いわけではなく、合体の中継ぎや中盤の相棒として、プレイヤーを堅実にサポートしてくれる「仕事人」としての立ち位置を確立しています。

Race: Primarily classified under the "Beast" or "Wilder" races in the series.
Mythological Origin: A two-headed dog from Greek mythology, born to the monsters Typhon and Echidna. He is the brother of Cerberus, the legendary hound of Hades. Orthrus was tasked with guarding the red cattle of the Titan Geryon but was slain by Heracles during his Tenth Labor.
In-Game Role: Orthrus is typically a reliable mid-tier demon. He specializes in Fire skills (the Agi family) and brute physical attacks using his fangs and claws. True to his elemental affinity, he generally nullifies or drains Fire-based attacks.

Design Contrast with Cerberus: While the series' iconic Cerberus is famously depicted as a single-headed white lion-dog (a unique interpretation rooted in the franchise's origins), Orthrus strictly retains his mythological "two-headed" silhouette. However, legendary character designer Kazuma Kaneko gave him a highly avant-garde color palette: a golden-yellow body, a dark green mane, and a segmented purple tail. This stark contrast makes him instantly recognizable.
The Infamous Betrayal in Megami Tensei II: In the classic Famicom game Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II, Orthrus is initially a servant of the demon lord Pazuzu and joins your party early on to help. However, in a memorable and frustrating plot twist, when the protagonist's best friend betrays them, he leaves the party and takes Orthrus, half of your Macca (currency), and a key item with him.
Overshadowed by His Brother: Because Cerberus is treated as the "ultimate faithful companion" to the protagonist in the MegaTen franchise, Orthrus often takes a backseat. He usually appears as a hostile wild demon or a standard fusion result rather than a story-centric ally. Despite this, he remains a very practical and hard-working guard dog for players navigating the mid-game.
