Johnston's Last Stand

On 25 October 1944, while assigned to 'Taffy 3' and after joining up with the Japanese 'Central Force' just north of San Bernardino Strait, Johnston and her comrades and friends were engaged by an unsuspecting Abyssal Fleet flotilla. In what became known as the Battle off Samar, Johnston and four of the other destroyers and destroyer escorts of both the US and Japanese fleets charged the Abyssal ships to protect their respective fleets. After engaging several Abyssal capital ships and a destroyer squadron, Johnston was sunk, along with fellow US destroyer escort Samuel B. Roberts.
