Quetzalcoatl

Quetzalcoatl is a mythological deity within Aztec mythology Co-creator of the universe; went to the underworld (Mictlan) to gather human bones to create the current human race. Folklore often conflates him with Ce Acatl Topiltzin, a historical 10th-century Toltec ruler of Tula who was reputed to be a peaceful ruler who opposed human sacrifice, advocating instead for offerings of birds, butterflies, and self-bleeding. The earliest known physical evidence of a feathered reptile appears in Olmec art during the Preclassic period (~1200–400 BC). At the site of La Venta (Tabasco), Monument 19 features a relief carving of a massive, crested rattlesnake sheltering a human priest or ruler. At this stage, it is primarily a symbol of earth, water, and agricultural fertility. Following the collapse of Teotihuacán in 650, regional powers scramble for legitimacy. At the Pyramid of the Feathered Serpents in Xochicalco, artists carve images of the god physically wrapping around stylized depictions of rulers and calendar glyphs. This indicates that holding "the mandate of Quetzalcoatl" was required a political foundation to a rule a Mesoamerican kingdom. When you look at indigenous oral traditions compiled in texts like the Leyenda de los Soles (Legend of the Suns) and the Anales de Cuauhtitlan, Quetzalcoatl is depicted as mythological hero: part cosmic savior, part clever trickster, and deeply devoted to protecting humanity. In the mythology; Quetzalcoatl populated the fifth one (our current reality) but the bones of the past generations were locked away in Mictlan (Aztec underworld) and tricked the ruler; the death god Mictlantecuhtli. To provide food for humanity Quetzalcoatl tricked a red ant for the source of the corn by disguising as a black ant and bring back a grain of corn for agriculture. To provide music, Quetzalcoatl confronted the musician hoarding sun with storms to give up its music hoard. This pure life of good deeds make his rival god Tezcatlipoca resentful, and with double-sided smoking mirror showed Quetzalcoatl's own aging, wrinkled, and physically frail causing a depression spiral about his own mortality, and subsequently tricked Quetzalcoatl into drinking a false cure to restore young age while in reality it was a pulque (an alcoholic, fermented agave beverage). Causing Quetzalcoatl to go in a drunken debaucher that broke celestial vows. In his final act of redemption feeling guilt about the chaos he caused, Quetzalcoatl ordered a giant stone chest to be built, lay inside it for four days, and then arose to leave Tula forever. He walked to the eastern sea, put on his divine feather crown and jade mask, and set himself on fire.
