The archway at the entrance glowed red and gold in the night. Dragon Boat Festival banners and lanterns hung along both sides of the street, their red, green, and golden light overlapping across the stone pavement like a river illuminated by celebration. The air carried the fresh scent of zongzi leaves, mixed with the sweetness of desserts, the fragrance of tea, and the smoky aroma of grilled food. The farther they walked in, the clearer the vendors’ calls and the laughter of the crowd became. “Wow… it’s so lively!” Miku stopped beneath the archway, her teal twin tails swaying lightly. She looked up at the long row of lanterns, her eyes shining almost brighter than the lights. “It’s so beautiful here at night!” Teto had already hurried a step ahead. Her red twin drills stood out clearly among the crowd, and she looked as if the energy of the market had lit a fire inside her. “There’s a zongzi stall up ahead!” she called back, waving. “And I think there’s a sachet stall too! Come on, hurry!” “Don’t run off too fast,” MEIKO reminded her with a helpless smile, though there was no real scolding in her voice. KAITO looked at the flow of people and the lanterns, then smiled faintly. “If it’s already this lively the night before the Dragon Boat Festival, the riverside should be even more crowded tomorrow.” “Because there’s a dragon boat event tomorrow,” Rin said, hopping over beside Len. The large white bow on her head bounced with her movement. “Maybe we’ll be the team everyone notices the most!” Len immediately lifted his chin, unwilling to lose. “Of course. As long as you don’t row slower than me.” “You’re the one who’d better not drag me down!” The two continued bickering as they followed everyone into the market. The street, decorated with colorful cloth banners, stretched far ahead. On both sides, stalls displayed bamboo leaves, mugwort, calamus, five-color cords, and strings of small sachets. Each sachet was embroidered with a different design: bamboo leaves, zongzi, tiny dragon boats, and even cute cat-paw patterns. Mio’s eyes were drawn to the cat-paw design immediately. She stopped in front of the sachet stall, her visible purple eye sparkling beneath her heart-shaped eyepatch. Her white cat ears twitched softly, and her shoulder-length hair, tinted faintly with pink and lavender, looked gentle and light under the lantern glow. “This blue-green one is pretty too.” みお picked up a small sachet with thin tassels hanging from its bottom. “It looks like the color of the river.” “Then みお should buy that one!” Mio said at once. “Mio wants the purple one. It matches my eyes!” The stall owner smiled and placed the two sachets into their hands. Mio held the purple sachet beside her face and compared it happily, her cat ears flicking with satisfaction. みお carefully put away the blue-green sachet, as though she was afraid of messing up its tassels. Not far away, Miku was looking at a row of teal sachets. She chose one embroidered with bamboo leaves and a small dragon boat, then turned around to show everyone. “Look, doesn’t this feel perfect for tomorrow?” “It suits you, Miku,” Luka said with a smile. Luka stood beside the stall, holding a round fan painted with bamboo leaves. The lantern light gave her pink hair a warm glow, and her blue eyes looked especially soft amid the shifting light of the night market. She lowered her gaze to the sachets on the stall and eventually picked up a small pink, black, and gold one. “These colors are beautiful,” she said quietly. Gakupo stood beside her, his long purple hair falling down his back, while the long locks in front of both ears reached his waist. When the night breeze passed by, his hair moved softly, yet it did nothing to disturb his calm elegance. He looked at the sachet in Luka’s hand, a faint smile appearing on his lips. “It suits you.” Luka raised her eyes to him. “Really?” “Yes.” Gakupo picked up another purple sachet, embroidered with golden bamboo leaves and delicate cloud patterns. “This one is lovely too.” Luka looked at the purple sachet in his hand, then at the pink one in her own. Her smile deepened slightly. “Then let’s buy them together.” She said it so naturally that Gakupo paused for the briefest moment. Then, in the next second, he replied quietly, “All right.” The stall owner placed the two sachets into a small paper bag printed with a Dragon Boat Festival dragon boat design. Luka took one of them, while the other was handed to Gakupo. Neither of them said much more. They simply walked forward side by side, surrounded by the crowd and the glow of lanterns. From deeper within the market came an even livelier sound. “There’s zongzi over there!” Teto’s voice rang out again. She was already standing in front of a zongzi stall, her eyes shining as she stared at the bamboo baskets piled high with wrapped zongzi. Beside the stall was a tasting plate with some leaves already peeled open, revealing glossy rice and steaming filling. The fragrance immediately drew everyone’s attention. “This looks so good!” Teto said, pointing at the tasting plate. MEIKO walked over and looked at her with a smile. “Didn’t you just say you wanted to look at all the stalls first?” “But the zongzi are glowing,” Teto said seriously. “They’re calling to me.” KAITO couldn’t help laughing softly. “I don’t think zongzi can talk.” “They can. At least in Teto’s ears, they can.” Rin immediately raised her hand. “Then I heard them too!” Len turned to look at her. “You just want to eat, don’t you?” “Don’t you?” Len fell silent for a second, then answered honestly, “…I do.” Everyone laughed. The stall owner divided the zongzi, whose leaves had been peeled open at the corner, into small portions and placed them on little bamboo-leaf-shaped plates. Mio held her small plate, her purple eye shining as she looked at the rice and filling. “You don’t eat it with the leaf still on, right?” みお nodded immediately. “Right. You eat the rice inside. The leaf is only wrapped around it.” “Got it!” Mio answered seriously. “Mio will only eat the inside!” She carefully took a bite, and in the next second, her cat ears shot upright. “It’s delicious!” Miku took a bite as well and smiled. “Eating this before rowing tomorrow feels like it’ll give us a lot of strength.” “Then we’re definitely going to win tomorrow,” Teto said, making a fist. KAITO gently reminded her, “Just don’t eat too much, or you’ll be too full before getting on the boat tomorrow.” “Don’t worry. I know my limits.” After saying that, Teto turned back to the stall owner. “Excuse me, do you have any other flavors?” MEIKO pressed a hand to her forehead. “Is that what knowing your limits means?” Laughter rose around the stall once more. After finishing their zongzi, they continued walking toward the riverbank. The closer they got to the river, the clearer the drums became. Several dragon boats were moored on the water in the distance, their green and golden lines reflected by the lights. The dragon heads at their bows faced the river, as if waiting for tomorrow’s race to begin. Miku stood by the railing and gazed at the dragon boats, her voice full of anticipation. “We’ll be riding one of those tomorrow, right?” “Yes,” KAITO said, looking out over the river. “It should be very lively.” “And exciting!” Rin said, clenching her fists. Len nodded. “And we absolutely can’t lose.” “Are you two already competing?” MEIKO asked with a smile. Teto tied the red sachet she had just bought around her wrist and said excitedly, “A race needs fighting spirit! Tomorrow, we’re going to row straight to the finish line!” Mio raised her own purple sachet. “Mio will cheer with the strongest cat energy!” みお added with a smile, “And row with the steadiest posture.” “みお, you really know how to ruin the mood.” “I’m trying to keep you from falling into the river.” The two looked at each other, then burst into laughter together. Luka gazed at the dragon boats on the river, the night breeze lifting her pink hair. The lanterns reflected in the water, becoming a string of trembling lights. He was quiet for a moment before saying softly, “Then tomorrow, let’s move forward together.” Luka turned to look at him, the light making the smile in her eyes even gentler. “Yes. Together.” The night wind passed through Chinatown’s riverside, carrying the scent of bamboo leaves, zongzi, sachets, and river water. Behind them, the market was still lively. And together, they stood at the starting point that led toward tomorrow. ------ 日本語 チャイナタウンの灯りと龍舟 前日の夜、彼らがチャイナタウンに着いた頃には、空はすっかり暗くなっていた。 入口の牌楼は、夜の中で金色と赤色の光を放っていた。通りの両側には端午節の旗と提灯がずらりと掛けられ、赤、緑、金の光が石畳の上で重なり合い、まるで祭りに照らされた一本の川のように見えた。空気には粽の葉の青い香りが漂い、甘い菓子の匂い、お茶の香り、炭火で焼かれる料理の匂いが混じっている。奥へ進むほど、屋台の呼び声や人々の笑い声がはっきりと聞こえてきた。 「わあ……すごく賑やか！」Miku は牌楼の下で立ち止まり、青緑色のツインテールを軽く揺らした。彼女は頭上に連なる提灯を見上げ、灯りよりも明るいほど目を輝かせた。「夜のここも、すごく綺麗！」 Teto はすでに一歩先へ進んでいた。赤いツインドリルは人混みの中でもひときわ目立ち、彼女自身も市場の熱気に火をつけられたようだった。 「前に粽の屋台があるよ！」彼女は振り返って手を振った。「それに香囊の屋台もあるみたい！早く早く！」 「あまり急に走っていかないの。」MEIKO が苦笑しながら声をかける。けれど、その口調に本気で叱る響きはなかった。 KAITO は人波と提灯を眺め、かすかに微笑んだ。「端午節の前日でこれだけ賑やかなら、明日の河辺はもっと人が多そうだね。」 「だって明日は龍舟のイベントがあるんだもん。」Rin が Len の隣へ軽く跳ねるように寄ってきた。頭の大きな白いリボンが、その動きに合わせて揺れる。「もしかしたら、私たちが一番注目されるチームになるかも！」 Len はすぐに負けず嫌いな顔で顎を上げた。「当然だろ。Rin が僕より遅く漕がなければね。」 「そっちこそ、私の足を引っ張らないでよ！」 二人は言い合いながらも、みんなと一緒に市場の中へ入っていった。色とりどりの布飾りが掛かった通りは奥へ奥へと続いている。両側の屋台には、竹の葉、艾草、菖蒲、五色の紐、そして小さな香囊がいくつも並んでいた。香囊にはそれぞれ違う模様が刺繍されていて、竹の葉、粽、小さな龍舟、そして可愛らしい猫の肉球柄まであった。 Mio はその猫の肉球柄に一目で惹きつけられた。 彼女は香囊の屋台の前で足を止め、片目を覆うハート型の眼帯の下で、紫色の瞳をきらきらと輝かせた。黒い猫耳がぴんと前を向き、頭の上のハート型のアホ毛も一緒に揺れる。 「これ、すごく可愛い！猫の肉球もあるし、小さい粽もある！」 みお も隣から覗き込んだ。白い猫耳が小さく動き、淡い桃紫色を帯びた肩までの短い髪が、提灯の光の中でやわらかく見えた。 「この青緑色のも綺麗だね。」みお は、下に細い房飾りが垂れた小さな香囊を手に取った。「川の色みたい。」 「じゃあ みお はそれを買う！」Mio はすぐに言った。「Mio は紫のやつにする。目の色にぴったり！」 屋台の店主は笑顔で、二つの香囊を彼女たちの手に渡した。Mio は紫の香囊を顔の横に当てて満足そうに猫耳を揺らし、みお は房飾りを乱さないように、青緑色の香囊を大事にしまった。 少し離れたところでは、Miku が青緑色の香囊が並ぶ一角を見ていた。彼女は竹の葉と小さな龍舟が刺繍されたものを選ぶと、振り返ってみんなに見せた。 「見て、これ、明日にぴったりじゃない？」 「Miku によく似合っているわ。」Luka が微笑んで言った。 Luka は屋台のそばに立ち、竹の葉が描かれた丸い扇を手にしていた。提灯の光が彼女の桃色の髪に温かな色を添え、青い瞳は夜市の光の中でいっそうやわらかく見えた。彼女は屋台に並ぶ香囊へ視線を落とし、やがて桃色と黒、金色が組み合わされた小さな香囊を選び取った。 「この色、綺麗ね。」彼女は静かに言った。 Gakupo はその隣に立っていた。紫色の長い髪は背中に流れ、顔の両側、耳の前に垂れた長い髪は腰まで届いている。夜風が吹くと、髪はそっと揺れたが、その落ち着いた優雅さは少しも崩れなかった。 彼は Luka の手の中の香囊を見つめ、唇に淡い笑みを浮かべた。 「君に似合う。」 Luka は彼を見上げた。「本当に？」 「ああ。」Gakupo はもう一つ、金色の竹の葉と繊細な雲模様が刺繍された紫の香囊を手に取った。「これもいい。」 Luka は彼の手の中の紫の香囊と、自分の手の中の桃色の香囊を見比べ、少しだけ笑みを深めた。 「じゃあ、一緒に買いましょう。」 あまりにも自然に言われたその言葉に、Gakupo はほんの一瞬だけ動きを止めた。けれど次の瞬間、低い声で答えた。 「そうしよう。」 二つの香囊は、端午節の龍舟模様が印刷された小さな紙袋に入れられた。Luka がその一つを受け取り、もう一つは Gakupo の手に渡る。二人はそれ以上多くを語らず、人波と灯りの中を並んで歩き出した。 市場の奥から、さらに賑やかな声が聞こえてきた。 「あっちに粽がある！」Teto の声がまた響いた。 彼女はすでに粽の屋台の前に立ち、竹籠に山のように積まれた粽を目を輝かせて見つめていた。屋台のそばには、葉を少し開いた試食用の皿も置かれていて、艶やかな米と湯気を立てる具材が見えている。その香りは、すぐにみんなの注意を引き寄せた。 「これ、すごく美味しそう！」Teto は試食皿を指差して言った。 MEIKO が歩み寄り、笑いながら彼女を見た。「さっき、先に全部の屋台を見るって言ってなかった？」 「でも粽が光ってるんだよ。」Teto は真剣な顔で言った。「私を呼んでる。」 KAITO は思わず小さく笑った。「粽はたぶん喋らないと思うけど。」 「喋るよ。少なくとも Teto の耳には聞こえる。」 Rin がすぐに手を上げた。「私にも聞こえた！」 Len は彼女を見た。「ただ食べたいだけでしょ。」 「Len は食べたくないの？」 Len は一秒ほど黙り、それから正直に答えた。「……食べたい。」 みんなが笑った。 店主は、葉を少し開いた粽を小さく分け、竹の葉の形をした小皿にのせてくれた。Teto は一番に受け取り、満足そうに香りを嗅いだ。Rin と Len はどちらの分が大きいか比べながら、熱い米を慎重に冷ましている。MEIKO は Mio に、湯気に近づきすぎないよう声をかけた。 Mio は小皿を持ち、紫色の瞳を輝かせて米と具材を見つめた。 「これ、葉っぱごと食べるんじゃないよね？」 みお はすぐに頷いた。「違うよ。食べるのは中のご飯。葉っぱは包んでいるだけ。」 「わかった！」Mio は真剣に答えた。「Mio は中だけ食べる！」 彼女は慎重に一口かじり、次の瞬間、猫耳がぴんと立った。 「おいしい！」 Miku も一口食べて、笑った。「明日、龍舟に乗る前にこれを食べたら、すごく力が出そう。」 「じゃあ明日は絶対勝てるね。」Teto が拳を握った。 KAITO は穏やかに注意する。「でも食べすぎないようにね。明日、船に乗る前にお腹いっぱいになりすぎるから。」 「大丈夫、ちゃんと加減はわかってるよ。」そう言い終えると、Teto は店主の方を向いた。「すみません、他の味もありますか？」 MEIKO は額に手を当てた。「それが加減をわかってるってこと？」 屋台の前に、また笑い声が広がった。 粽を食べ終えたあと、彼らは河岸の方へ歩き続けた。川に近づくほど、太鼓の音がはっきりしてくる。遠くの水面には何艘かの龍舟が停泊していて、その船体には灯りを映した金色と緑色の線が浮かんでいた。船首の龍頭は川へ向かい、明日の競漕が始まるのを待っているようだった。 Miku は欄干のそばに立ち、龍舟を見つめながら期待を込めた声で言った。 「明日、私たちもああいう船に乗るんだよね？」 「うん。」KAITO は川面を見ながら答えた。「きっと賑やかになるよ。」 「それに、すごくわくわくする！」Rin は拳を握った。 Len も頷いた。「それに、絶対負けられない。」 「あなたたち、もう勝負を始めてるの？」MEIKO が笑って言った。 Teto は買ったばかりの赤い香囊を手首に結び、興奮気味に言った。「競争なんだから、闘志は必要でしょ！明日は一気にゴールまで漕ぐんだから！」 Mio も自分の紫の香囊を掲げた。「Mio は最強の猫パワーで応援する！」 みお は微笑んで付け加えた。「それと、一番安定した姿勢で漕ぐこともね。」 「みお って、本当に水を差すのが上手だよね。」 「Mio が川に落ちないようにしてるだけ。」 二人は顔を見合わせ、そして一緒に笑い出した。 Luka は川の上の龍舟を見つめていた。夜風が彼女の桃色の髪を持ち上げる。提灯の光は水面に映り、揺れる光の列になっていた。彼女は買ったばかりの香囊にそっと指を触れ、本当の競漕が始まる前から、この夜に何かがもう始まっているような気がした。 Gakupo は彼女の隣に立ち、同じ川面を見つめていた。 「緊張しているのか？」彼が尋ねた。 Luka は少し考えてから、首を横に振った。 「少し、楽しみなの。」彼女は微笑んだ。「みんながいるから。」 その言葉を聞いて、Gakupo の紫色の瞳に河岸の灯りが映った。彼はしばらく静かにしてから、やわらかく言った。 「なら明日は、一緒に前へ進もう。」 Luka は彼を見上げた。灯りに照らされたその瞳の笑みは、とても穏やかだった。 「ええ。一緒に。」 夜風がチャイナタウンの河岸を吹き抜け、竹の葉、粽、香囊、そして川の水の匂いを運んでいく。背後では市場がまだ賑わい、前方では龍舟が静かに水面に浮かび、夜明け後の最初の太鼓の音を待っていた。 十人は灯りと河の輝きの間に立ち、明日の競漕がどれほど賑やかなものになるのか、まだ知らなかった。 けれど少なくともこの瞬間、彼らは一緒にこの祭りの夜へたどり着いていた。 そして一緒に、明日へ続く出発点に立っていた。
