19 Feb 1277 – Cherven, Bulgaria. The Greeks and Romans have always considered the land of the Bulgars as 'semi-civilized', above the barbarian, but below their own sophisticated Roman status. Indeed, the land of the Bulgarians has always been treated as a periphery. The current Tsar of Bulgaria, Konstantin Tikh, is proof of that; he is more concerned about maintaining his alliance with the Byzantines and not upsetting them than being assertive. What does this mean for the people of Bulgaria? Tales of horror, villages and town erased from the Earth leaving nothing but ash and its grass eaten by the Golden Horde's flock, the Golden Horde may just be a shadow of the Mongolian Empire but they still inherit their sophisticated military and penchant for brutality. Yet one man would attempt to defy it all. Flora proclaimed after the village had gathered: "Tatar raiders from the north! Plundering and erasing villages whilst the Bolyars sit behind the krepost fortress walls and take whatever bread remains in the ruins. They'd rather see us starve than defend Bulgaria! These are the words of Ivaylo!" Flora had to trust the words of Ivaylo's messengers. But the proof was undeniable: plunder traced back to Byzantine origins and recurve bows were delivered in advance to bolster Flora's village ranks. According to the Byzantines; Ivaylo was just a lowly swineherd trying to usurp the power of the local Bolyars. But what good were the Bolyars if they didn't protect the people while taxing the lands? And why was Ivaylo able to deliver jewels and weapons from both the Byzantines and Tatars? The logical conclusion: Ivaylo wasn't some random swineherd, but a man of true deeds. And indeed Ivaylo won against the Golden Horde, victories that had eluded the Bolyars. The Golden Horde, like their Mongolian predecessors, in large part relied on terror and open battlefields for their success. This was proven by their victories over the combined heavyweight of Poland and the Holy Roman Empire decades prior, let alone many other countless stunning triumphs. Bulgaria, however, is known both as a land of mountains and the spiritual cradle of the Slavic world for inventing the Cyrillic script within Bulgarian churches. This offered both a home advantage in uneven terrain and a people ready to defend a sacred heritage. "Ivaylo has driven the dog-heads of the east back to where they came from, without a singly Bolyar troops! And he will come here, too! The Bolyars are not going to save us; the Byzantines want us weak and the Tatars will spare no one! If we want to live, we must follow him. Draw your arms! We make our stand here and defend our homes. We are already dead in the eyes of the court in Tarnovo!" Flora drew her saber; a weapon forbidden to be wielded by ordinary peasants, but the peasantry had to defend themselves. At her call to arms, her fellow peasants gathered their farming tools as makeshift weapons. They would make their stand here and hope that Ivaylo would arrive. Because the Mongols would massacre anyone who dared to flee, and with no emperor, no Tsar, and no Bolyar coming to their defense, it was entirely up to them. They poured all their hope into the belief that Ivaylo was more than just a swineherd; that Ivaylo was the start of something larger, something that could defy the Golden Horde, the Bolyars, and the Byzantine Empire alike... —- This story is dedicated to @Rudy Lis and his OC Flora..
