The camera looks down at her from a high three-quarter angle, the underside of the veranda's eaves cutting the top of the frame. She sits back on her heels in seiza on the worn wooden boards of a palace veranda, knees together, her long blue robe pooled in a neat fold around her hips, the wide sleeves settling over her thighs. Her short dark blue hair, blunt bangs low over her brow and side locks framing her cheeks, falls forward as she tilts her head a little to her left. One hand drifts up to loosely clasp the other at the small of her back; the pose leans her gently forward, weight settled over her heels. Her eyes, half-lidded, slip sideways toward the open shoji screen behind her, away from the viewer, and her mouth rests in a faint closed-lip smile that shows a trace of her freckled cheeks and a calm, faintly tired curiosity. The veranda is plain and sunlit; beyond the screen a courtyard with pale gravel and one stone lantern lies out of focus. Soft daylight, cool-toned from the left sky and warm where it strikes the wood, falls across her cheekbones and the folds of her skirt; long faint shadows from the eaves stripe the boards behind her. Palette held to deep indigo-blue, dark blue hair, the warm pale wood of the veranda, and the washed grey-green of the courtyard beyond. Quiet, observant, gently wistful.
