A single feminized young mage stands in a snow-filled night, seen from a low dutch-angled three-quarter side view with the camera tilted so the horizon slants down to the right; her body is turned half away from the lens while her chin pulls back over her shoulder toward the viewer. She is caught mid-cast: her right arm is thrust out and down, fingers wrapped hard around a tall mage staff of dark lacquered wood banded with tarnished brass, its crystal head blazing an icy white-blue above her shoulder, while her left hand is planted flat on her own hip, knuckles pressed into the long coat's waist so the fabric bunches under her palm. Weight rides on her back foot, front knee softly bent, one boot heel lifted out of the snow. Her hood is pulled up and the front rim rides forward over her brow, spilling the low ponytail out from beneath the back of the hood so the tail lies over her shoulder and the single ahoge springs free at the crown, whipping in the wind. Under the dark hooded robe she wears a long coat of deep charcoal wool with wide turned cuffs and long sleeves buttoned at the wrist, its hem swinging out past short tailored shorts and her thighs to the boots. Her jaw is set, teeth clenched visibly behind a tightly closed mouth, corners pulled down with effort, and her green eyes are fixed past the staff's glowing head into the blizzard. A single mole sits small and clear just beneath her right eye on the lit cheek. Sidelighting rakes in from the left: one cold hard key from off-frame catches the rim of the hood, one cheek, one shoulder of the coat, the crystal's facets and the snowflakes passing through the beam, while the entire right side of her body falls into blue-black shadow, and the staff lays a long thin shadow across the snow to the right. Snow falls thick and near, flakes bright where they cross the light and dim in the dark, and it settles only on upward-facing surfaces -- the shoulders of the coat, the top of the hood, the flat brass collars of the staff, flakes collecting there and nowhere on the vertical faces. The ground is a seamless drift of untouched snow with the print of her back boot crushed deep and dark behind her; nothing else stands in the empty white field beyond the fall of the light. Palette restricted to the white of snow, blue-black shadow, charcoal wool and the pale icy light of the staff, with her light brown hair the single warm note. Cold, charged.
