A tiny panda cub, no taller than a fern frond, sits upright on a thick cushion of soft green moss, seen from a low camera placed almost at ground level so the cub towers over the bottom edge of the frame in a close-up while the trunks of enormous trees rise behind it and recede into haze. Its body is compact and round, black fur on the ears, eye patches, shoulders and legs, white fur on the face and belly, the fur rendered as dense fluff that breaks into fine tufts at the chest and the crown of the head. The head tips down toward the lens and the eyes are turned upward, looking directly at the viewer with wide dark pupils catching two small highlights; the black ears stay pricked, the muzzle is short with a soft dark nose, and the mouth is barely open in a small breath. Both forepaws grip the moss in front of it, claws sinking into the green fibers, the hind legs folded under the hips so the belly rests on the cushion and dents it; a few moss strands are crushed flat beneath the weight. To its right, half hidden behind a fern stem and slightly out of focus, a single round mushroom with a pale luminous cap glows faintly, and that glow lights the underside of the cub's chin and the inner edge of its forelegs. The key light comes from behind and above through a canopy gap, a shaft of pale gold slanting down at an angle, rimming the fur along one side of the head and shoulders so the outline shines white while the face stays in soft shadow, and mist thickens with distance until the far trunks dissolve. Scattered glowing spores drift in the air, and their light is caught on the damp curve of the mushroom cap and on the dew beads along the moss. The palette stays in greens, cool teal shadow and warm gold light with the panda's black and white as the anchor. Quiet wonder.
