The camera sits low at knee height on a narrow residential street, tilted a few degrees off level, so the girl looms up out of the frame and the sky opens over the rooftops behind her. She bursts through the low wooden gate of her house already at full sprint, caught mid-stride: her left foot planted hard on the asphalt in the foreground, her right leg drawn back and toe still leaving the ground, torso pitched forward over her lead knee. Her right hand grips the handle of a brown leather school bag, the satchel swung out behind her hip and its flap lifted by the run; her left arm is thrown forward, elbow bent, hand half-closed. A slice of toast is clamped between her teeth, bitten edge facing out, and her lips are pressed thin around it while her cheeks pull back with the effort. Her black hair streams back off her shoulders and past her ears in long separate strands, the ends whipped sideways, her bangs blown up off her forehead. Her white short-sleeved shirt is crisp, buttoned to the collar, the sleeves flaring as her arms drive; the black pleated skirt kicks out behind her thighs with the pleats fanned open, one hand's width of air between the hem and her knees. White crew socks are pulled to mid-calf, the near sock compressed into a crease at the ankle over a dark loafer gripping the ground. Her eyes are wide and fixed dead ahead down the street toward school, brows lifted, jaw working around the bread.
The gate she has just cleared hangs open behind her, still quivering on its hinge, and the asphalt under her lead shoe shows the cracked seam of the pavement catching her shadow. Light comes low and warm from the sunrise behind and to her right: it rims her hair and the edge of the toast in gold, throws her long shadow forward and left across the road toward the viewer, and floods the empty street ahead. The far side of the street is a receding row of low walls, hedges and utility poles with a few small illegible house-number plates, softened by distance and slight motion blur; the sky above the rooftops is pale peach fading to clean morning blue, one thin cloud. Palette: black hair and skirt, white shirt and socks, warm brown leather bag, and the peach-gold of early sun on grey asphalt, nothing else competing. Cool morning air still hanging in the shaded side of the street, warm light pouring down the other. Bright, breathless, on-the-edge-of-late.
