A landscape-format photograph shot at 85mm from slightly below the branch, so the main fruit sits in the lower-left third of the frame and the eye travels up along it toward open sky. One tight cluster of ripe deep-red apples hangs from a slender woody branch that enters the frame from the upper left and angles down across the image; the branch is sharp from bark to stem, and each apple hangs by its own short, slightly darker stem, the fruit's weight pulling the stems taut so the apples sit just off vertical. The nearest apple turns its cheek to the sun, its skin a deep saturated crimson shading to near-black in the shoulders, the surface waxy, scattered with fine pale lenticels, a small dry calyx at its base; two more apples of the cluster overlap behind it, one partially hidden by a leaf. Golden afternoon sunlight enters from behind and above, low and warm, and the leaves between it and the lens glow a luminous yellow-green, their veins showing as darker lines; that same backlight rims the top edges of every apple with a thin bright line of warm light and leaves their undersides in deep shadow, so the sunlit skin appears lit from within. Green leaves frame the cluster on the right and above, some crisp along the branch, some soft and out of focus in front of the lens at the very foreground edge. Beyond, the background falls away into a bluer, cooler distance: an open patch of blue sky through the canopy, high and slightly right of center, and foliage bokeh -- circular out-of-focus discs of pale gold and green-white where sunlight punches through the leaves -- scattered across the upper right and mid-distance. Further back and smaller with distance, two or three more apple clusters hang at different depths, one midground group slightly soft at the frame's left edge and a fainter red cluster low in the distance at right, each diminished in size and contrast by aerial perspective. The focus plane holds on the nearest cluster and the branch beside it; everything behind softens progressively. Shot wide open, the bokeh discs are round and clean-edged, brightest where the sun breaks through the canopy. Fresh, abundant, sun-warmed.
