Hanging Gardens of Babylon (redux)
Location unknown, suspected location: modern day Hillah, Iraq. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon, celebrated as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, is attributed to King Nebuchadnezzar II (605–562 BC). According to Strabo, he constructed them for his Median wife, Queen Amytis, who longed for the mountainous greenery of her homeland in Persia. Described as a tiered complex resembling a "large green mountain," the gardens featured terraced orchards and vibrant flora including cedars, cypresses, and fruit trees supported by stone pillars and vaulted brick arches. The gardens spanned was purported to be very large and employed Archimedes' screws to lift water from the Euphrates River for irrigation.
