London Guildhall (pre-1940)
Once the location of the Roman Londinium amphitheatre of AD 70, whose foundations were rediscovered beneath the yard. guildhall. The first documentary mention of a guildhall here dates about 1127–28, and by 1411 the present Great Hall was begun under Mayor Thomas Knowles, completed ~1440 to reflect the growing power of London. Built of robust stone walls that survived the Great Fire of London in 1666 (though the roof was lost), It has long served as the civic heart of corporate London, hosting the Court of Common Council and ceremonial banquets.
