He had been listening a long while before he understood why her words unsettled him. Then she said it again — a thing with no name in any tongue these fields had ever heard, dressed in roots he knew from another life, from books, from Latin. His hand closed on her arm before he meant it to. "Where are you from," he asked, in the old language. And for the first time since she fell into this world, someone had asked her in words she could answer.
