A soft whimper escaped her before she could stop it. "Lady Xue Rong," the guard said sternly, "do not attempt to tamper with your restraints." Her cheeks warmed with embarrassment and frustration. "I was doing no such thing," she replied, though the excuse convinced no one. To ensure there would be no further attempts, the guard checked the knots again and tightened them slightly. Xue Rong winced and lowered her gaze, realizing she had only made her situation worse. The lock behind her clicked shut, sealing the now-empty cell. "Move," the lead guard ordered. Defeated but trying not to show it, Xue Rong straightened her posture and lifted her chin. With the rope secure and guards on either side of her, she was escorted away from the cell block and toward the prison's exit.
