More to See

the one, a robust and stout middle-aged man with a buzz cut, wearing rimless glasses, a rugged and fierce face, a big belly, a vertical knife scar on the chest extending from below the neck to above the belly, wearing a dirty, torn, open white shirt, loose black large shorts, and yellow slippers, gripping a steel rebar rod in his hand, walking towards the fire staircase on one side of the building, the door of the stairwell is half-open with a faded safety exit sign on it where most of the green fluorescent paint has peeled off, he gently pushes the door open with the tip of the rod, causing the door hinges to emit a harsh metallic grinding sound that echoes in the empty building, inside the stairwell is even dimmer than the lobby, only faint light shining in through small windows at each floor landing barely illuminating the steps, large patches of paint peeling off the walls revealing gray cement layers, dust accumulating on the handrails, some sections rusted and broken, hanging in mid-air, the air filled with a damp and musty smell mixed with a faint smell of rust, he stands at the entrance of the stairs and looks down—the stairs spiral down, disappearing into the darkness with no bottom in sight, he takes a deep breath, tightens his grip on the rebar rod, and takes the first step, his footsteps being exceptionally clear in the stairwell, each step accompanied by the slight sound of rolling gravel and the occasional echo of the metal rod hitting the handrail, the only yellow slipper making a dull thud on the steps while his bare sole silently steps on the cold concrete, he descends floor by floor, passing abandoned floor entrances, some doors open revealing dark spaces inside, others tightly locked with unknown silence seeping from the gaps, he passes a floor and sees a dark brown stain on the wall, irregular in shape, like the trace left by some dried liquid, he does not stop, just tightens his grip on the rod and continues down, as he del deeper, the light becomes darker and the air colder, his breathing echoes in the enclosed stairwell as if someone is following his steps in the darkness, he occasionally stops and listens—only silence and his own heartbeat, finally, he reaches the bottom of the stairs, a heavy fire door blocks his path, no window on the door, only a rusty metal plaque with "B1" written on it, he pushes the door with his hand, it doesn't budge, he takes a deep breath, presses his shoulder against the door, and pushes hard—the door emits a dull creak and slowly opens a crack, a colder, damper air rushes out from the gap, he does not enter immediately, but stands at the doorway, gripping the rebar rod, his gaze alertly looking into the darkness behind the door.
