The End of Glory

No glory lasts forever. Its end arrives gradually, yet inevitably—even for the greatest of heroes. France found itself increasingly cornered by a succession of defeats, including the loss at Trafalgar and the disastrous Russian campaign. While they achieved some tactical victories, they repeatedly committed decisive strategic blunders. The "Continental System," intended to isolate Britain, proved to be a disastrous misstep that only fueled hostility from other nations. Seizing upon this situation, a coalition of anti-French powers cornered the nation, forcing the man to abdicate his throne as Emperor. However, he escaped his place of exile by exploiting the disarray among the Allies regarding the post-war settlement, and—backed by loyal citizens and subjects—he reclaimed the imperial throne. He rapidly rebuilt his army and prepared for a final confrontation against British forces and the Allied armies advancing from the rear. Although the situation initially favored him, the fragility of his hastily assembled army soon became apparent; a lack of coordination—exacerbated by erroneous orders from certain generals—threw the ranks into disarray. Ultimately, the French army under his command suffered a decisive defeat, marking the total destruction of the *Grande Armée* that had once swept across Europe.
