"Big Ben" is the nickname for the great bell housed within the clock tower attached to the Palace of Westminster (the Houses of Parliament), one of the UK's most iconic historic landmarks. Although the structure was officially named the "Elizabeth Tower" to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of the late Queen Elizabeth II, it remains widely known—both domestically and internationally—by its traditional nickname, which encompasses the clock tower itself. When the Palace was rebuilt following a fire caused by staff negligence in 1834, the decision was made to reconstruct it in the Gothic architectural style and include a clock tower. Construction took over 24 years, with the tower finally completed in 1859. The clock tower stands 96.3 meters tall; the lower 61 meters are constructed of brick, while the upper section consists of a cast-iron spire. A light illuminates the spire when Parliament is in session (LED lighting is currently used). Reaching the bell requires climbing a spiral staircase of 334 steps. The clock faces are positioned 55 meters above the ground. Each clock face consists of a 7-meter-diameter iron frame fitted with 324 pieces of opaque glass arranged like stained glass, with gold plating adorning the perimeter. Beneath each clock face, the Latin inscription "DOMINE SALVAM FAC REGINAM NOSTRAM VICTORIAM PRIMAM" ("O Lord, save our Queen Victoria I") is engraved in gold lettering.
