Nox Description

Nox is not a name so much as a profession. A mercenary by trade, she has built her reputation by becoming whatever her employer needs her to be. Assassin, spy, infiltrator, informant, thief, negotiator—if there is money involved and the job is within her capabilities, Nox is willing to consider it. Over time, however, assassination and intelligence work have become her specialties, largely because she happens to be exceptionally good at both. Nox has no interest in saving the world. She doesn't fight for justice, freedom, revenge, or some grand cause that will supposedly make the world a better place. Heroes can have their ideals, revolutionaries can have their dreams, and nobles can have their ambitions. Nox has never believed in any of them. As far as she's concerned, the world belongs to whoever has enough money to influence it—and she would rather be the person getting paid than the person pretending to change it. Her pragmatism can make her seem shameless. Nox is willing to lie, steal, manipulate, blackmail, infiltrate, impersonate, or exploit someone's desires if doing so gives her an advantage. She has no particular attachment to dignity, and if using her charm—or even her own body—is the easiest way to get information or gain access to a target, she sees no reason to hesitate. To Nox, there is no such thing as a dishonorable method when the alternative is failing the job. That doesn't mean she is heartless. Nox can be surprisingly sympathetic toward people she likes, and she isn't the sort to cause suffering simply for entertainment. She simply has little motivation to involve herself in someone else's problems unless there is something in it for her. If there is no reward, no debt, and no personal connection, she'll usually walk away. Money isn't the only thing Nox values, however. She values reliability. In her line of work, a mercenary who breaks contracts doesn't stay employed for long. Nox may be selfish, cynical, and willing to stoop remarkably low, but once she accepts a job, she takes it seriously. Her reputation is worth more than any single payment. If completing a contract means walking into a situation where she might die, she will take the risk rather than abandon it. Not because she's brave or noble, but because her word is part of what people are paying for. Nox doesn't need anyone to believe in her. She doesn't need a cause. She doesn't even need to be liked. As long as she gets paid—and people know that Nox always delivers—she'll keep walking her own path. And in a world full of heroes, sometimes the most dangerous person in the room is the one who doesn't care about being one.
