Shot from a low, tilted angle at the foot of an enormous canopied bed, the camera looks up across the mattress at a single demon queen half-reclined against a drift of black silk pillows. The queen — one figure, alone, no one else in the room — lies on her left side: her left forearm is planted in the bedding to hold her torso up off the mattress, her left shoulder rolled forward and the elbow locked so the weight travels down through the forearm into the pillow, while her right hand rests flat on her own left hip where the gold filigree cinches the sheer silk. Her hips are slung slightly toward the lens and her legs are crossed at the ankle and drawn up a little, so the sheer fabric of the outfit parts into a long slit and both legs and the whole bare midriff between the filigree belt and the braid of fabric are laid open to the light. The needle-tipped tail trails off the far edge of the bed and its spear point hangs over the mattress edge in the same hard backlight, and her two large wings are unfurled behind her shoulders, the membrane stretched and the leading edge catching the light while they fold clear of the pillows so they never clip them. Her head is turned down and sideways toward the lens, chin dipped as if looking at something close to the floor rather than at the viewer, and the two horns rise from her hairline. The cascade of almost-liquid black hair spills off the pillow, over her left shoulder, and down between her shoulder blade and the silk, and it reflects the backlight in a long moving ribbon rather than a matte mass.
The chamber around the bed is enormous and empty: a vaulted dark-stone palace interior, black ribbed columns and a pointed arch far behind the bed, tall lancet windows beyond the headboard that spill cold light down out of the upper dark, a heavy carved bedframe with a black canopy pulled back to the side, dark brocade hangings, a single tall candelabra standing on the far side of the bed. That window and that candelabra are the only light sources: the window throws a hard cold rim along the top of her shoulder, the curve of her hip and the outer edge of each wing membrane, and the candelabra throws a separate warm, much weaker glow up onto the near side of her face, her collarbones, the sheer fabric and the gold filigree, so that everything beyond those two pools falls away into absolute black. The background is thrown out of focus so its vaulting reads as soft dark shapes and bokeh points while she stays sharp.
The palette is closed and disciplined — midnight black-purple in her skin, deepest black in the hair, the stone and the hangings, one cold blue-white in the window light, and a thin gold in the filigree belt plus a warm candle gold on the near cheek — with a single saturated violet reserved for the eyes, which glow from beneath her lashes and throw the faintest violet sheen onto the ridge of the pillow beneath her chin. The whole figure is held together by a crisp white contour, a bright unbroken line riding her silhouette against the dark, brightest where her wing edge and shoulder cut the window light, and the same white edge picks out the spear tip of her tail. Depth of field is shallow: the bedding in the near foreground sinks out of focus before her hands, and the far arches soften away. Her lips are slightly parted over the grin, one corner pulled up around the small pointed facial anatomy. High-contrast cel shading with crisp borders, ominous and regal.
