Sunlight filtered through layer upon layer of leaves, scattering fragments of light across the forest path. When the breeze blew, the blades of grass swayed gently, and every so often a birdsong drifted from somewhere far off. Aside from that, the whole forest seemed steeped in a long afternoon nap. Megurine Luka walked alone along the path, unhurried. She had only meant to find a quiet place for a walk, but as she passed by a cluster of bushes, she suddenly noticed a flash of white up ahead. A rabbit. It sat quietly beside the roots of a tree. Luka stopped in her tracks. "…A rabbit?" The white rabbit didn't run away. Instead, it lifted its head and looked at her. Stranger still, hanging around its neck was a small golden pocket watch. The watch swayed with the rabbit's slight movements, catching a dazzling flash of light in the sun. Luka couldn't help but take a step forward. The white rabbit immediately turned and bolted. "Wait!" The rabbit took off running. Luka chased after it without thinking. It darted through the bushes, then slipped between two enormous ancient trees. Luka ran faster and faster, yet always remained just a little behind. "Wait, I just want to see your watch!" The white rabbit seemed not to hear her at all. At last, it suddenly leapt into a patch of low grass. By the time Luka reached the spot, the rabbit was nowhere to be seen. In its place stood a massive ancient tree. Its roots coiled across the ground, and within one of the cracks between them was a pitch-black opening. Luka crouched down. She peered into the opening. It wasn't an ordinary hollow in a tree. The walls of the hole were studded with tiny golden lamps. Deeper still, she thought she could make out floating clocks, teacups, and playing cards. "What... is this?" She reached her hand toward the opening. At that very instant, a gust of wind suddenly blew out from within. Caught off guard, Luka's foot slipped. "Ahh—!" Her whole body pitched forward. She didn't collide with the tree roots. Instead, she fell straight into that impossible, bottomless hole. "Aaaah—!" She tumbled downward, falling and falling. But it wasn't like an ordinary fall. Her body didn't gain speed — instead, she seemed to float, as if in a world without gravity. An open book drifted past beside her. Then a teacup. A heart-shaped playing card. A bouquet of roses. Even a golden pocket watch, its hands spinning counterclockwise. Startled, Luka reached out to grab one of the objects, only to be swept away the next moment by a swirling current of air. "What in the world is this place...?" She had no time to find an answer. A dazzling white light suddenly flared before her. The next instant— Thump! Luka landed in a great bed of soft flowers. Rose petals scattered in every direction from the impact. She lay in the middle of the flowerbed, staring blankly up at the sky. The sky was, astonishingly, purple. Clouds drifted like cotton candy, and in the distance hung an impossibly enormous moon — even though it was clearly still daytime. Luka slowly sat up. "…This isn't the forest." She looked around. Giant red roses swayed beside her. In the distance, a path made of black-and-white checkered tiles wound its way through the forest. Dozens of playing cards floated in the sky. Further away still, a towering black-and-purple castle stood atop a hill. At the center of the castle hung an enormous clock. Yet its hands were, unmistakably, running backward. Luka stared, transfixed. "Just... where have I ended up?" "Wonderland." A low, gentle male voice came from behind her. Luka spun around at once. Not far away stood an unfamiliar man. His long black-and-purple tailcoat swayed gently in the breeze; his deep purple waistcoat bore delicate golden patterns; white gloves covered his long, slender fingers. His long hair was a vivid, pure purple, part of it falling naturally in front of his ears and cascading all the way down to his waist. His purple eyes appeared deep and clear in the sunlight. In his hand he held a black-and-purple cane, its top set with an exquisite heart-shaped ornament. And pinned to his chest was a playing-card brooch woven from purple and gold. Luka instinctively got to her feet. The man looked at her, his expression calm. "You fell down the rabbit hole, didn't you?" "…How did you know?" "Because it's been a very long time since any outsider has come here." Luka looked around. "This place... is it really called Wonderland?" The man gave a slight nod. "At least, it used to be." The words made Luka pause. "Used to be?" The man didn't answer right away. His gaze passed over Luka, drifting toward the great clock in the distance, its hands still turning backward. "Something has gone wrong with this world recently." "The garden paths change on their own, time has begun to run in reverse, and even the creatures of the forest have gradually grown strange." He turned his gaze back to her. "And your arrival here is, I'm afraid, no coincidence." Luka was quiet for a moment. "Then who are you?" The man lightly raised his cane and bowed to her with elegance. "Kamui Gakupo." "The Purple Rose Duke of Wonderland." Luka looked at him. "A duke...?" "Yes." There was a faint trace of amusement in Gakupo's tone. "Though in this world as it stands now, I'm afraid few still remember that title." Just then— The sound of hurried footsteps suddenly rang out in the distance. A group of black playing-card soldiers came charging out from the far end of the forest. Luka took a step back. "What are those...?" "Stand back." Gakupo's voice remained calm. In the next instant, he had already stepped in front of Luka. The card soldiers brandished the long spears in their hands, charging toward the two of them. Gakupo raised his cane. A burst of purple light bloomed instantly from its tip. A massive rose vine surged up from the ground, blocking every soldier in an instant. The card soldiers collided with the vines and toppled to the ground, one after another. Luka's eyes widened in astonishment. "Magic...?" "Welcome to Wonderland." Gakupo turned to look at her. "The common sense of this place is quite different from that of your world." Before Luka could respond, the great clock in the distance suddenly tolled, heavy and resonant. Dong— For an instant, the entire world seemed to fall silent. For the first time, Gakupo's expression turned grave. Because the clock's hands had, once again, ticked backward by another notch. Luka looked toward the castle. Now, she didn't even know whether she could ever find her way home. Gakupo lowered his cane and began walking toward the checkered path. After a few steps, he stopped. He turned back to look at Luka, who still stood among the roses. "If you want to return to your own world, you can't stay here alone." Luka paused slightly, caught off guard. Gakupo extended his hand toward her. "Come with me." "At least until we find a way back, I'll protect you." Luka looked at that white-gloved hand. After a moment, she slowly reached out her own. Their fingers touched, gently. And in the very instant she took Gakupo's hand— Deep in the forest in the distance, the white rabbit with the golden pocket watch appeared once more. It glanced back at the two of them. Then it vanished swiftly into the purple forest. No one noticed. That the hands of the watch around its neck were turning in the exact opposite direction of the castle clock.
