姚萇 景茂 Yao Chang Jingmao

Yao Chang was the founder of Later Qin, the younger brother of Yao Xiang, and ultimately the inheritor of his brother's failed cause. He had once served Former Qin with distinction, but after Fu Jian (Yonggu)'s disastrous southern campaign shattered the empire's authority, Yao Chang joined the succession of former subjects, conquered peoples, and displaced elites who rose against it. He eventually captured Fu Jian and had his former sovereign killed. According to the Book of Jin, as Yao Chang lay gravely ill, he dreamed that Fu Jian returned at the head of heavenly officials and hundreds of ghost soldiers to seize him. Yao Chang fled in terror. Palace attendants tried to fight off the spirits, only to strike Yao Chang in the groin by mistake. The ghosts declared that the blow had landed "exactly on the place of death". When he awoke, his condition appeared eerily to reproduce the dream, and the terrified Yao Chang began pleading with his dead sovereign: "I, your servant Chang, swear that it was my elder brother Xiang who killed Your Majesty. It was not my doing. I beg Your Majesty not to condemn your servant unjustly."
