Spring had returned to Hina Lodge. For Konno Mitsune, the season always brought back the same memory. The cherry trees around the lodge would bloom, their petals drifting lazily through the warm afternoon air. It was the sort of day that made even the usually busy lodge feel peaceful. Mitsune had stepped outside wearing her short kimono, her fox ears twitching whenever the breeze passed through them. In each hand was a cold beer can. She sat beneath the cherry tree and looked up at the falling petals. One landed gently on her ear. She flicked it away. Another landed on her shoulder. Then another. Soon she was surrounded by a little storm of pink. Mitsune smiled. She remembered sitting in almost exactly the same place years ago, listening to the wind through the trees while the lodge bustled behind her. The world had changed since then. People had come and gone. The seasons had passed. But spring always brought her back here. She raised both cans toward the blooming branches. “To old memories.” The petals continued falling. For a moment, Mitsune simply sat there beneath the sakura, enjoying the beer, the breeze, and the familiar warmth of Hina Lodge. Some memories didn't need to be complicated. Sometimes, all they needed was spring.
