豊後国において蛇神の末裔と畏怖されていた大神一族を出自とする戦国武将で神職の面も持ちながら大友家や藤堂家の重臣として活躍した武将です。 身体（両脇下と背中の下あたり）に3枚の鱗が生えていたり雨の日を吉日としていたそうです 豊臣秀吉から志賀親次と共に絶賛された人物ですが、宇目攻めなどで本人が戦場に出ることもありますが基本は後方から様々な差配をしたり統制や内政的（藤堂高虎が治めた伊予や津に佐伯町が出来ている）な活躍が目立ちます。 肥後一揆の頃に大友家から離反を疑われますが妻の兄である志賀親次の弁護に助けられたことがあるようです。 九州征伐時に領内に豊臣秀長や藤堂高虎を宿泊させ日向への道案内もしているため豊臣兄弟に出る可能性がほんのちょっぴりあるかも（秀長没後に大友が改易され豊臣秀保の家臣となります）
