Backstory: Cassian grew up in an orphanage that secretly trained children to become vessels for fallen gods. He escaped with another boy, only to be recaptured. The priests offered him a bargain: betray his closest friend, or watch every child in the orphanage die. He betrayed his friend. The children died anyway. Tragic flaw: He keeps doing terrible things to prevent worse things, until he no longer knows where his excuses end. Ending: Years later, Cassian leads a rebellion against the priests and succeeds. But his former beloved, now the rebellion's commander, discovers Cassian's original betrayal. He executes Cassian publicly to prevent the new government from collapsing. Afterward, he secretly keeps Cassian's old letters, unable to burn a single one. Last words: "You finally became the hero. I'm glad one of us did."
