In the left background, an earthen clay hearth stove (kamado) glows with soft orange embers beneath a multi-tiered wooden bamboo steamer (seiro), which vents thick, billowing plumes of white steam carrying the scent of cooking glutinous rice. At the center of the wooden prep table, the first chibi tanuki girl—distinguished by glossy black hair tied in a high bouncy ponytail with an indigo ribbon, vivid blue eyes, and rounded furry tanuki ears—leans forward with both hands buried deep into a pliable mass of vibrant forest-green kusa dango dough, her blue kimono sleeves tied securely out of the way with a white cord (tasuki) and a smudge of flour across her left cheek as she beams with energetic determination. Beside the hearth, the second chibi tanuki girl stands on tiptoes in a cream-toned yukata, wearing padded cloth mitts as she carefully lifts the round cedar lid of the steamer, squinting through the rising aromatic vapor with her bushy banded tail puffing out away from the heat. To the right side of the counter, a third chibi tanuki girl in a pale green hemp kimono kneels beside a wide, flat woven bamboo sieve (zaru) overflowing with serrated, fragrant deep-green mugwort (yomogi) leaves, holding up a single perfect stem between two fingers with a proud, puffed-cheek grin. Along the front edge of the table, the fourth chibi tanuki girl in a yellow kimono uses the flat of both palms to roll a piece of green dough into a smooth, glossy sphere, carefully threading three finished round dango onto a bamboo skewer with the tip of her tongue poked out in intense concentration. The fifth girl, wearing a soft pink floral yukata, claps her small hands over a shallow wooden bowl, sending a light airborne cloud of white rice flour suspended into the air, her eyes squeezed shut in crescent laughs. Sunlight filters through a high paper shoji transom, cutting through the swirling steam and highlighting suspended specks of rice flour that settle exclusively across the horizontal planks of the wooden table and apron bibs. Warm hearth firelight warms the left quadrant in amber tones, contrasting with the crisp herbal emerald of the pounded dough and fresh leaves. Playful and heartwarming industry.
