At the left wall sits a rounded clay earthen kamado stove, its firebox glowing with warm amber embers while a stacked round wooden seiro steamer atop it billows thick, curling plumes of white steam upward toward exposed cedar ceiling rafters. Resting on the low stone ledge beside the stove is a shallow woven bamboo sieve (zaru) piled high with fresh, serrated deep-green mugwort leaves. In the center of the kitchen, five small chibi tanuki girls with fluffy rounded raccoon-dog ears and thick, bushy ringed tails work cooperatively around a sturdy low wooden worktable. On the far left near the stove, the first girl, wearing a lavender kimono with tucked-up sleeves, stands on tiptoes on a small wooden step-stool, resting both hands on the edge of the stone hearth as she peers wide-eyed into the drifting steam. At the center of the table, a girl with black hair pulled into a high ponytail tied with a pink ribbon and clear blue eyes wears a pale blue kimono under a white apron; she carries a round wooden pail of hot, glistening steamed glutinous rice, gazing happily down at the glossy grains. To her left, a third girl in a red kimono plants both flour-dusted hands firmly into a soft mound of vibrant green mugwort-infused dough, leaning her upper body forward with puffed cheeks as she kneads it against the wood. Across from her on the right, a fourth girl in a yellow kimono rolls a single spherical green dango between her cupped palms, her head tilted playfully with the tip of her tongue peeking out in deep concentration. At the far right edge of the table, the fifth girl in a light green kimono carefully places three-ball skewers of finished, glossy kusa dango onto a flat rectangular bamboo tray, her fluffy tail swishing behind her hem. Translucent wisps of steam drift through the air and curve toward a high slatted ventilation window, revealing the gentle airflow through the room, while a fine dusting of white rice powder clings visibly to the grain of the worktable and the girls' small fingers. Warm morning light pours through a side lattice window, illuminating suspended flour particles and casting soft diagonal shadows across the smooth wooden floorboards. The palette centers on earthy cedar browns, warm terracotta clay, and deep herbal greens, accented by the soft pastel cotton of the kimonos. Cheerful and heartwarming.
