On the Load-Bearing Properties of the Dead

For two millennia, the inclusion of laborers within the structures they built has been treated as an atrocity. This paper argues that it should also be treated as an engineering practice, with measurable results. Drawing on the Qin frontier walls and the Xia capital of Tongwan, we show that human-inclusive masonry has superior tensile strength, self-monitoring capacity, and resistance to cavalry assault. We also examine maintenance challenges, chiefly persistent green bioluminescence and occasional weeping.
