Story Chapter 6: Along the Perimeter

The morning sun beat down on the streets surrounding the enemy facility as Red Mirage jogged along the outer perimeter, keeping a steady pace while carefully observing her surroundings. Sweat glistened across her forehead and cheeks, with small beads tracing down her face and neck after the sustained run. Her breathing had grown heavier, and the fabric of her athletic top clung slightly to her skin from the heat and exertion, but she maintained her pace without complaint. To anyone watching, she looked like an ordinary woman out for a morning jog. In reality, every stride brought her closer to the information she needed. As she passed the tall security fence, she glanced toward the guard towers and studied the armed personnel patrolling the restricted grounds. One guard walked along the inside of the fence while another stood near a checkpoint, occasionally turning to speak with his colleague. Red Mirage kept her expression composed, resisting the urge to stare for too long. She continued along the road, carefully noting the main entrance, a smaller service gate, and a side access point partially obscured by a utility building. The security arrangements were more extensive than she had anticipated, with cameras covering several stretches of the perimeter and guards stationed where the road approached the gates. She wiped the sweat from her brow with the back of her hand and took a controlled breath, pretending to ease into a slower jogging pace as she approached another section of fencing. “So many guards… and not a single obvious opening,” she thought, her sharp brown eyes studying the compound from the corner of her vision. She could not risk approaching any entrance directly yet; that would attract precisely the kind of attention she wanted to avoid. Instead, she continued her circuit, using the rhythm of her jog to observe the guards' movements and memorize the layout. The heat and exertion were beginning to take their toll, but she pushed onward until she had a clearer idea of how the facility was monitored. As she reached a bend in the road, she glanced back toward the main gate, her damp face settling into a thoughtful expression. “All right,” she murmured between breaths. “I've seen the entrances. Now I need to figure out which one gives me the best chance to get closer.” She maintained her jog, determined to finish surveying the outer walls before deciding on her next move.
