Blue and violet neon pooled in the rainwater, breaking apart beneath the three companions’ footsteps. D walked at the front. His cobalt-blue jacket had darkened in the rain, its white collar clinging to the sides of his neck. Deep blue-black strands of hair framed his face, while the red markings across his forehead and around his eyes caught the cold glow of the signs. His green eyes remained fixed on the street ahead, as though the entire city held only one person—the one he had yet to find. Kamui Gakupo followed half a step behind, one hand resting lightly on the sword hilt at his waist. The two long locks in front of his ears fell down his chest to his waist, separate from the purple ponytail streaming in the wind. From time to time, he scanned the windows above and the mouths of the alleys, watching the corners D overlooked as he stared ahead. Megurine Luka walked beside Gakupo, her long pink hair damp with mist and rain. She glanced down at the terminal in her hands and enlarged the route D had marked earlier. “There’s a security camera at the next intersection,” she said. “The maintenance passage on the right will take us around the front entrance.” “Assuming that way’s still open.” D did not look back. His voice was low and cold. The coordinates supplied by an informant had brought them to an old freight depot wedged between a shopping center and an elevated roadway. A transaction record might still be there—one connected to the attack D was investigating. Might. He had heard that word far too often since arriving in Night City. When they reached an awning, Luka put her terminal away for a moment. The headlights of a passing car illuminated D’s profile, revealing the tension in his jaw. “You can tell us,” she said softly. “That person you’ve been hunting—what did they do to you?” D stopped. High above them, an advertisement displayed a radiant smile. Rain filled the brief silence between the three of them. “My clan was massacred.” He spoke slowly, as though each word had to be forced between clenched teeth. Luka did not answer at once. “I used to have somewhere to go back to.” D looked across the road, though his gaze seemed to reach somewhere far beyond it. “There were people I thought I’d see again.” The hand at his side tightened into a fist. “Now I have to pay strangers just to piece together why they died.” Gakupo watched him, his fingers easing slightly on the sword hilt. “So that’s why you’ve come all this way.” “I’m going to find the killer.” D turned toward him. There was no hesitation in his green eyes. “I want to know what happened. And I want that person to pay.” Neon flickered briefly in his eyes. “You can still walk away. What comes next won’t be pretty.” Gakupo glanced toward the alley entrance, making sure no vehicles were turning in, before meeting his gaze again. “You find the leads. I’ll watch your back.” Luka brought up her terminal once more. “We need an escape route, too.” She turned the screen toward them. “Once we have the data tonight, we leave through here. There are two exits. I’ll monitor them.” D’s gaze moved from her screen to Gakupo’s face. For a moment, he seemed about to say something. Instead, he gave a quiet acknowledgment. “Stay close.” They left the awning and followed the outer wall into a narrow alley. A security camera beside the maintenance door rotated slowly. Gakupo raised a hand, signaling the other two to remain in the shadows. Luka dimmed her screen and kept watch on the intersection. D crouched beside the wall and connected to the maintenance port. His expression changed. The anger that had weighed on his voice settled into concentration. His eyes followed the system’s responses. He made no immediate attempt to open the door. First, he checked the connection, then worked his way toward the access he needed. Luka monitored their escape route. Gakupo stood a short distance away, shielding D from anyone looking in from the street. A few seconds later, the camera stopped turning. The lock clicked. “Inside.” Gakupo stepped aside to let Luka through first, then followed them in. Only the backup lights illuminated the freight depot. Empty shelves cast long, narrow shadows, and water dripping from the ceiling tapped steadily against the metal floor. D quickly found the old terminal. His shoulders tightened as the screen came to life. Standing just behind him and to one side, Luka watched rows of records scroll across the display. Several entries retained only timestamps and identification numbers. The important fields had been erased. “Did you find it?” she asked. D did not answer. His fingers paused over one entry. The data had been moved. The next access point was still listed at the end of the log. “There’s a lead we can follow,” he finally said. “It still doesn’t prove who did it.” Luka looked at him, then toward the door. “Then let’s take it with us.” Somewhere in the corridor, machinery started up. Gakupo turned immediately, his hand closing around the sword hilt. He did not draw the blade. “D,” he said quietly. “Time to go.” A new warning appeared in the corner of the screen. D stared at the unfinished data, frustration flashing in his eyes. So close—always so close. He could almost feel the answer waiting beyond the next directory, close enough to reach. “Wait a little longer.” “The side exit’s access status has changed,” Luka said, her voice still steady. “We need another way out.” Gakupo stepped forward, placing himself between D and the corridor. “If you want to keep following this, we need to get out with what you’ve found.” D clenched his jaw. When the warning sounded again, he finally terminated the connection and secured the data he had retrieved. “Left.” This time, he led them through the shelves and pushed open the door to the rear alley. Rain struck their faces. They emerged onto the neon-lit street as the maintenance door slowly closed behind them. Only after making sure no one was following did Luka allow her tense shoulders to relax. Gakupo’s hand left the sword hilt. Standing in the rain, D examined the record again. The killer still had no name. The people he remembered were still gone. “Where do we go next?” Luka asked. D sent the data to her terminal. Blue light illuminated her eyes. After studying the screen for a moment, she raised a hand and pointed toward the far end of the street. “Past the overpass, then two more intersections.” Gakupo looked toward the layers of neon ahead. “Let’s go.” D put his terminal away and took a step forward. At the corner, he slowed his pace. Only when the two sets of footsteps behind him drew level with his own did he lead them onward, deeper into the rain.
