Light comes from beneath: the chest core is the single dominant source, throwing a hard rim across the underside of the beak and throat, through the translucency of the wing membranes so the bones show through as dark ribs, and up into the feathers so each one is edged while its upper face stays solid black; the sky's magenta-tinged cloud is the only other light and it stays flat behind. Palette is locked to black, crimson and gold against a cold bruised purple-green sky, with the pale green of the drained essence as the one alien intrusion. Wind drags the long tail feathers sideways and pulls every upward-floating particle into the same spiral. Awestruck, catastrophic.
