large dragon, black and purple dragon, two horns, four fingers, four-fingered hands, wings spread wide, halloween necklace, jack-o'-lantern pendant necklace, bat-shaped beads, decorations tied to wing claws, ribbon bows on wing claws, troubled expression, worried eyes, furrowed brow, sweatdrop, beast people, anthropomorphic animal people, grey-furred beast man, cream-furred beast man with large ears, dark-brown-furred beast man, three beast people, decorating, hanging halloween decorations, carrying garlands, arranging pumpkin ornaments, halloween town plaza, cobblestone plaza, decorated square, string lights, pumpkin lanterns, banners, from below, wide shot, low angle, dutch angle, outdoor, dusk, crowd in background, candelit lanterns The camera sits low and looks up across a cobblestone town plaza at dusk, so the black-and-purple dragon looms against the darkening sky. It stands in the middle of the square, planted on one foot with the other slid back, weight sunk into its hips in a bracing stance: both wings are flung wide open, each spread to full span, the membrane stretched taut and translucent at the edges where the sky shows through it, and the whole wing surface gives a slow shuddering tremble. Its long neck is drawn back and slightly to one side, away from the hands working near it. This is a dragon, not a person: scaled hide in deep black that runs toward violet on the underside, a band of rich purple marking the neck to the shoulders and the leading edges of the wings, two horns sweeping back from the skull, one horn catching the lantern light, the other sunk in shadow. Each hand shows exactly four fingers -- three long clawed fingers and an opposed thumb -- and the spread wing fingers read the same way, four digits per wing. Around the base of its neck hangs a halloween necklace: a cord strung with small carved jack-o'-lantern beads and thin bat-shaped charms, sitting crooked because the dragon has been trying to shake it off. Ribbon bows and tiny paper bats are tied onto the claws at the wing tips, three bows knotted around the wing digits, and the tips stay pinioned outward because the ties hold them. Its face carries the trouble the scene is about: brows pulled inward and up in the middle, lower eyelids raised into a squint of mild distress, mouth a small unhappy flat-toothed grimace, one sweatdrop at the temple, and it glances down and away toward the hand closest to its shoulder -- a sidelong, cornered look rather than any anger. Three beast people work around it, completely unintimidated. To the left, a short grey-furred beast man with tan-skinned hands, in a burnt-orange linen tunic and brown leather trousers, reaches on tiptoe with both arms up to hook a garland of paper bats along the dragon's spread wing; one of his feet is planted on an overturned wooden crate and the other toeing the cobbles for balance, his tongue poking from the corner of his mouth in concentration. On the right, a cream-furred beast person with big round ears, in a purple velvet vest over a white cotton shirt with the sleeves rolled to the elbow, holds a festive banner between both hands and stretches to loop its cord over the wing-claw beside the bows. Behind and below, a dark-brown-furred beast person in a forest-green woolen sweater and khaki pants crouches by a stacked pile of pumpkins, arranging them into a ring at the dragon's feet and humming to itself. All three look only at their decorations, not at the dragon's face. One of the grey beast man's hands presses flat against the wing membrane, which dimples slightly under the fingertips. The plaza around them is dressed for the holiday: a town square of grey-blue cobblestones between low timbered buildings, string lights zig-zagging overhead between the rooftops and hung with small lanterns, carved pumpkin lanterns clustered at the edges of the square, doorways draped in black and orange cloth, and distant townsfolk in silhouette going about their own decorating. The lanterns are lit and the sun is nearly down, so the key light is the warm low sun from the right and the warmer orange lantern glow from below; the shadowed side of the dragon falls in cool blue-violet, and each lantern throws a long soft pool of light across the stones. The palette holds to black and purple for the dragon, with autumn orange, deep red, warm gold and black-and-orange halloween accents everywhere else. Warm, gently comic.
