It thickens with distance so that the far end of the road dissolves into a flat wall of white, and it hangs low enough to swallow the base of the poles and to make the nearest house's second floor pale. Damp asphalt darkens in patches; shallow puddles along the gutter edge hold the sky as soft, dim, blurred reflections that are darker and less defined than the fog above them, and thin water runs along the seams of the concrete curb. Small droplets bead on the guardrail, on the awning lip, on the sign face and on the leaves of a trimmed hedge, each wet surface lit by nothing but the diffuse pre-dawn sky, so shadows are almost absent and every vertical is soft-edged. The light source is the whole overcast sky, cool and low; the vending machine adds one localized blue-white glow that pools on the wet concrete at its base and dies quickly. Palette limited to blue-grey, desaturated green, wet black asphalt and the pale white of the fog; red-and-white striped pole bands and the sign's green are the only saturated notes. No text overlay, no lettering other than the sign and incidental shop lettering kept small and illegible. Still, cold, and completely silent.
